What happens at the first court hearing after charges are filed? What is an arraignment?

Arraignment is the initial court proceeding where a defendant is advised of his charges, and usually enters a “Not Guilty” plea.

Normally the state provides the defense with discovery and any available police reports, and the defense is given time to examine those items.

The court will then set a “status conference” date to come back to court and check in on the progress of the case.
